The new apostolic constitution Praedicate Evangelium replaces Pastor Bonus, promulgated by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1988, and later modified by both Benedict and Francis.
Pointing out the changes go into effect Dec. 8, 2021 on the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Msgr. Padazinski said the date “reaffirms that life itself and the protection of human dignity begin at the instant a child is conceived in the mother’s womb."
The revisions, published June 1, were first commissioned by Benedict XVI with the aim of making the code’s penal sanctions more effective and applied evenly across the Church.
Pope Francis has written a preface to the Italian edition of Fr. Fiorito’s guide to the spiritual exercises, which he called “a real treasure trove to enter into the soul of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.”
