Despite fierce opposition from most of his own archdiocesan priests, including his metropolitan vicar, the head of India’s Syro-Malabar Church celebrated Palm Sunday Mass facing the altar for part of the liturgy.
The Syro-Malabar Church is today one of four major archiepiscopal churches recognized by Rome.
Sts. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Euphrasia Eluvanthingal were added to the communion of saints Nov. 23 at the Vatican.
