Online visitors can navigate the Vatican basilica’s mosaics, the cupola, the underground necropolis and Peter’s tomb. A ticketed, in-person experience is also designed for the jubilee year, plus a Minecraft edition. The basilica will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its consecration in 2026.
The focus of the project: the soaring baldacchino over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini 400 years ago.
The statue’s dedication will take place on Sept. 16, the anniversary of Saint Tae-gŏn’s beheading by the Korean Joseon Dynasty.
The new path will bring pilgrims past Michelangelo’s Pietà and the tomb of St. John Paul II directly to the chapel with daily eucharistic adoration and the back corner of the basilica reserved for confessions.
The holy hour, according to a press release, is part of the pastoral initiatives of the basilica.
