SAINTS & ART: ‘Jesus saw a man named Matthew’ and told him, ‘Follow me.’ And Matthew did.
“As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9)
COMMENTARY: It is especially appropriate to pray for the Pope on the feast of St. Matthew on Sept. 21 — the date when 16-year-old Jorge Bergoglio discerned his priestly vocation.
The Call of Saint Matthew calls us all to contemplation, to a deeper encounter with our Lord.
St. Matthew traveled at least as far as Ethiopia to spread the Good News, wrote a Gospel, and was martyred for Jesus’ sake.
Today, Sept. 21, we celebrate the feast of St. Matthew, also called Levi.
