The archbishop of Seoul said WYD 2027 will be the first of these gatherings to take place in a predominantly non-Christian country.
The bishops underlined that nothing in society should be put before human life and dignity and asked local authorities to respond accordingly to ensure that a disaster like this is never repeated.
All three leaders are in Rome this week for the G20 summit which will take place Oct. 30-31.
“I would like to thank you for your gesture of Christian charity, which really touched me,” Pope Francis said.
Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, the current archbishop of Seoul, remembered his predecessor as someone who “wanted the Church to be the light and salt of society, and practiced a pastoral ministry that emphasized the values of life and family.”
South Korea’s president is Catholic, but has not taken a public stand on the abortion law.
About one in five South Korean Catholics are over the age of 65, and only 8.5% of Catholics are age 19 or under.
The young woman, who evangelized among her fellow inmates after converting to Christianity in a North Korean prison camp, is one of the lucky few of the faithful to escape the religiously repressive regime.
