In an Aug. 18 pastoral letter, the bishop of Madison also called Catholics to join him in offering acts of reparation for the sins of sexual immorality among Catholic deacons, priests and bishops.
A media report earlier this month suggested such a move was under consideration, but papal spokesman Greg Burke has downplayed such speculation.
‘And those who covered it up are guilty,’ the Holy Father told journalists, and said that while he is willing to forgive clergy who have abused children and young people, he understands why there are some who find this difficult.
