No, Pope Francis Didn’t Really Hint That the Requirement for Priestly Celibacy Will Be Lifted
COMMENTARY: Celibate priests live as Christ lived in this world. His celibacy and his sacrifice gave life to the world.

‘It is not eternal like priestly ordination, which is forever, whether you like it or not. Whether you leave or not is another matter, but it is forever. On the other hand, celibacy is a discipline.’
The initiative referred to is a newly announced book on priestly celibacy and the crisis in the Church and priesthood, co-authored by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Cardinal Robert Sarah, who is head of the pope’s liturgical office.
COMMENTARY: Celibacy in the Latin Rite is not a negative thing — it is a rule of freedom, because it has enabled Catholic clergy to give themselves to the Church and to the mission of evangelizing the world in a way rarely seen in other Christian communions.

COMMENTARY: There are many perfectly logical reasons to abandon priestly celibacy, and there always have been. Why did the Latin Rite never do so?
Prefect of the Pontifical Household says the Pope has awoken expectations regarding Church reform but not yet clear how these will all be played out.
