Catholic bishops in Poland have ruled out the possibility of blessing “same-sex unions,” but remain open to blessing individuals with homosexual tendencies, only if they are “living in complete abstinence” of sexual activities.
The Polish Bishops’ Conference says that ‘further archival research’ is needed to fairly assess a new allegation, based on communist secret police records, made in a documentary. Previous allegations were refuted by investigative journalists late last year.
Archbishop Gądecki acknowledged that the Holy See is committed to neutrality in international affairs.
The nunciature’s statements said the Holy See made the decision to sanction the bishops “as a result of the completed investigation,” which followed the procedures set out in Pope Francis' 2019 motu proprio Vos estis lux mundi.
The bishops did not cite any examples in their statement, but it followed a high-profile incident in July in which protesters attached a rainbow flag to a historic statue of Christ in the capital, Warsaw.
Archbishop Gądecki encouraged Catholics to post photos and videos to honor the saint’s legacy.
The Polish episcopate made the announcement Oct. 10.
