In November, the U.S. Senate will take up the House reconciliation bill that would strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding while it is under investigation by Congress.
The Oct. 23 budget reconciliation bill also rejected parts of the Affordable Care Act, a move that drew criticism from Democrat pro-lifers who said this linkage undermined bipartisan support.
While few people in the pro-life movement view a shutdown as a realistic path to defunding after the House declined yesterday to pursue that avenue, other options remain on the table.
The Catholic lawmaker is leaving Congress after four years of leadership and infighting in his own caucus that came to a head recently over the issue of defunding Planned Parenthood.
In a separate vote today, the House of Representatives also voted to strengthen the federal Born-Alive Infants Protection Act.
