ANALYSIS: As the Holy Land again descends into violent conflict, the peacemaking Latin patriarch of Jerusalem has emerged as a respected leader of the local Church in the Middle East.
The feast in honor of Our Lady, Queen of Palestine and patroness of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, was first celebrated on Aug. 15, 1928.
Among the victims killed were 17 Orthodox and one Muslim, according to the Order of St. George.
Cardinal Pizzaballa has called for a day of prayer and fasting for peace and reconciliation in the Holy Land on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
Patriarch Pizzaballa spoke of the “unique patrimony” of the city of Jerusalem, and said it was the responsibility of religious and secular authorities to protect the sacred land.
The 56-year-old Church leader issued a reflection on the causes of the current conflict, which has claimed more than 200 lives.
In his homily, Patriarch Pizzaballa pointed to the difficulties associated with being a diocese covering four countries with four distinct national identities, in addition to navigating language differences.
