Archbishop Domenico Battaglia of Naples held up an ampoule containing the relic of the third-century martyr-saint’s blood in Naples Cathedral on Sept. 19, revealing the liquefaction to shouts and cheers. The reputed miracle usually occurs up to three times a year.
Over the weekend, armed robbers entered a pizzeria in a Naples suburb, pointing guns at families eating dinner, including young children.
During the miracle, the dried, red-colored mass confined to one side of the reliquary becomes blood that covers the entire glass.
The liquefaction is believed to happen at least three times a year, including Dec. 16, but not this year.
This phenomenon is said to happen three times a year: May 1, Sept. 19, which is the saint's feast day, and Dec. 16. The last time this occurred with a pope was in 1848.
