The text forbids large indoor gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic, with a narrow list of exceptions, including for priests celebrating Mass via live stream, as well as wedding receptions and funerals.
Three separate Eucharistic processions Sept. 20 began at St. Anthony, St. Patrick, and Star of the Sea parishes, and converged at United Nations Plaza near San Francisco City Hall before proceeding to the cathedral.
A July 13 letter from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to local parishes called the development “discouraging.”
COMMENTARY: Many decisions by dioceses to resume public Masses have come on the heels of some important legal victories.
The community said one of the members who tested positive for the coronavirus since has regularly celebrated Mass since the parish reopened on May 2.
Archbishop Coakley said that while he understands Catholics’ fear, anger and frustration during these past two months of suspended Masses, he also encouraged them to think of their time away as a way of serving others.
Since the suspension of public Masses, there have been a few clashes between priests and Italian police.
Bishop Baldacchino is the first U.S. bishop known to have amended a previously declared diocesan ban on public Masses since the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the U.S. last month.
