JD Vance was among the last officials to meet with the late Pope Francis before he died on Monday.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the private audience took place at approximately 11:30 a.m. The Pope presented Vance with several gifts, including rosaries for Vance and his family and chocolate Easter eggs for the Vance children.
The vice president’s visit came within the context of his international tour, which brought him to Italy and will continue to India.
The Vance family is in Rome April 18-20.
It’s unknown whether Vance will meet with Pope Francis, who is still recovering from an illness that recently required him to stay in the hospital for more than a month.
In his remarks, Vance returned to the theme he raised in his February speech at the Munich Security Conference, in which he criticized European Union leaders for undermining free speech and democracy.
Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the vice president plans to arrive in Rome on Good Friday, April 18, and depart from the city on Easter Sunday, April 20.
COMMENTARY: Since the first presidential speaker at spring commencement in 1960, seven of the 12 presidents in office have not been invited to Notre Dame’s commencement.
On St. Patrick’s Day, the vice president personally guided Dominican Father Henry Stephan through the presidential residence.
The absence of both figures from the agenda appears to be a break from tradition and is likely to raise concerns about partisanship.
