DIFFICULT MORAL QUESTIONS: When Pope St. John Paul II authoritatively condemned abortion in 1995, he used a form similar to formulas used in earlier infallible declarations.
COMMENTARY: Scripture, sacred Tradition and our Catechism all agree: Sexual activity must be confined to a lawfully married husband and wife.
“Dogmas are lights along the path of faith; they illuminate it and make it secure. Conversely, if our life is upright, our intellect and heart will be open to welcome the light shed by the dogmas of faith.” (CCC 89)
COMMENTARY: As the Catholic Church marks the 150th anniversary of Pastor Aeternus, it is an occasion for us to be grateful for the gift of the teaching authority of the Church, especially that of the pope.
It takes much more faith to believe in inspiration of Scripture than infallibility.
“The pastoral duty of the Magisterium is aimed at seeing to it that the People of God abides in the truth that liberates. To fulfill this service, Christ endowed the Church's shepherds with the charism of infallibility in matters of faith and morals.” (CCC 890)
