As his cause for canonization proceeds, Servant of God Vincent Capodanno’s heroic and virtuous life is remembered every Sept. 4 with a memorial Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.
Though many of the soldiers to whom Father Capodanno ministered in Vietnam were likely drafted, Capodanno chose to be there.
The ‘Grunt Padre’ died on a Vietnam battlefield as a military chaplain to U.S. Marines. Theological consultants recently voted to recommend to Vatican dicastery that the cause be suspended. But supporters remain hopeful that an appeal will resume the efforts.
