The urgency of the diocese’s initiative is underscored by rising suicide rates.
Priests are hearing confessions outside of St. Mary’s Basilica, right across from the Phoenix Convention Center. Volunteers are handing out sacramentals like rosaries and Miraculous Medals, in addition to informational pamphlets on the Catholic faith.
The Diocese of Phoenix’s new ministry is part of a larger trend in the Church aimed at providing support for those experiencing mental illness and their families.
The Office for Catholic Mental Health Ministry is set to open in January 2023.
Phoenix is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. and the diocese serves 1.2 million Catholics.

'The issue with using ‘We’ is that it is not the community that baptizes a person, rather, it is Christ, and Him alone, who presides at all of the sacraments, and so it is Christ Jesus who baptizes,' Bishop Olmsted explained.
Bishop Olmsted acknowledged that there have been many who have asked their pastors to grant them exemptions, but noted that “it is employers who grant exemptions, not pastors.”
The bishop warned that reluctance to speak out in such cases is a pastoral failure, rather than a charitable politeness.
