The document requests that the bankruptcy court either disallow the loan arrangement between the diocese and the fund or else subject the funds to the terms of the bankruptcy proceedings.
The California deacon’s award-winning Christmas display of almost 1 million lights is more than just a spectacle — it’s an evangelization tool and a labor of love.
The diocese filed for bankruptcy in May of last year after hundreds of child sexual abuse lawsuits were brought amid a three-year legal window implemented by the California state government.
To mark the 32nd World Day of the Sick, Frank La Rocca’s special Mass setting will be heard Feb. 10 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California.
Bishop Barber said in his letter that the bankruptcy filing will not affect the diocese’s Catholic schools, employees, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent de Paul Society, or Catholic cemeteries.
‘After much prayer and thoughtful advice, I believe bankruptcy can provide a way to support all survivors in their journey toward healing in an equitable and comprehensive way.’
Those who are not yet vaccinated against COVID-19 are asked to continue to wear masks at Mass, Bishop Barber said, but the new protocols are based on the “honor system.”
Bishop Barber, in recounting the incident, said he prayed to God and wondered whether he would die.
The list, to be released in roughly 45 days, will include the names of diocesan and religious priests, as well as extern priests.
