Texas Bishop: ‘No Reason’ for Catholics to Attend SSPX Mass if They Can Go Elsewhere
Bishop Olson published the letter on Thursday after he “received several inquiries regarding the ecclesial status” of the traditionalist Catholic society.
Bishop Olson published the letter on Thursday after he “received several inquiries regarding the ecclesial status” of the traditionalist Catholic society.
The SSPX is a traditionalist group that is not in full communion with the Catholic Church and has a canonically irregular status.
The dispute between the Carmelite nuns and Bishop Olson has grown increasingly bitter over the last year.
If the District Court of Tarrant County grants the monastery’s request, it would prevent Bishop Olson, the president of an association of Carmelite monasteries and any representatives of the diocese or the association from entering the premises.
The monastery also directed some of its frustrations toward how the Vatican has handled the dispute
The Holy See ordered the nuns to ‘withdraw and rescind your declaration’ challenging the bishop’s authority.
June 30 ruling grants the Fort Worth Diocese’s motion to dismiss the monastery’s complaint, which accused Bishop Michael Olson of theft, defamation and abuse of power.
The attorney representing the nuns, Matthew Bobo, has yet to issue a statement since the hearing finished.
COMMENTARY: Forty years ago, such punishments were rare and light; today, they are frequent and severe. Has balance been restored?
The new charges levied by the monastery are in addition to a lawsuit filed on May 3 that seeks $1 million in civil damages and asks the court to block the bishop’s and the diocese’s access to any records obtained by confiscating the reverend mother’s property.
