The diocese, which serves more than 278,000 Catholics in 23 counties of central Ohio, is experiencing declining church attendance and fewer young priests, as well as population decline and population shifts. Two Catholic schools will also close, though new schools may be built.
‘Further discussion regarding the Diocese of Steubenville’s future will be conducted at the diocesan level,’ Bishop Jeffrey Monforton said Nov. 7. More than 15 priests and two deacons penned a letter to the bishops of Ohio asking them to reconsider the merger.
To implement a more student-focused vision for campus ministry, Bishop Earl Fernandes has appointed the diocesan director of evangelization to direct the center, in place of the Paulist Fathers.
