
US Defense Secretary Pauses Allowing Transgender Troops to Enter the Military

In response, pro-life Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville launched what turned into a 10-month-long standoff in which he attempted to pressure the administration to rescind the policy.
The $895-billion defense bill contains language that prohibits certain transgender procedures for minors under the military’s health-care plan.
Tuberville has explained that his block is about defending the lives of unborn babies and following a law known as the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal tax dollars from being used for abortion.
Tuberville has refused to allow the promotion of senior military officials until the Defense Department ends its policy of paying for service members’ abortion travel. Wednesday’s debate displayed the growing disunity of Republicans’ approach to the Biden administration’s abortion policy in the military.
The National Defense Authorization Act sets the military budget each year.
The Republican senator is delaying approval of some military promotions, to focus attention on a policy that could exponentially increase the number of abortions subsidized by the Department of Defense.
The new allowances will not cover the costs of abortion procedures, and military doctors are only allowed to provide abortions in limited circumstances.
In August 2021, the Pentagon announced that all service members would have to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and over 99% now are.
