The state’s highest court ruled Jan. 28 that expired time limits on lawsuits can’t be undone, blocking certain abuse claims against the Diocese of Portland.
In addition, the archdiocese will post a public apology in the archdiocesan newspaper addressed ‘to all known child sexual abuse claimants.’

Lawyers for both victims and the archdiocese said in a joint press release that the settlement would address 1,353 childhood sexual-abuse claims filed against the California archbishopric.
Eduardo Romani, Archbishop Cargnello’s defense lawyer, criticized the verdict as “flawed” and lacking any foundation in the law. He has already filed an appeal.
Jacob Luecke, a representative for the diocese, told CNA that the decision to allow Father Medina to retain his priestly faculties and continue to receive retirement support from the Church was made by the Vatican, not the diocese.
‘The physical, emotional, and mental harm from sexual abuse lasts a lifetime,’ District Attorney Jason Williams said in a statement.
Archbishop Aymond said it is not yet known what that total contribution will be, or what will be asked of each entity but stating that he remains committed to ensuring the majority of the settlement trust is paid with the assets of the Archdiocese of New Orleans — including real estate sales — and its insurers.
The Vatican’s doctrinal dicastery cleared him of several of the charges in 2021 while ruling that five other accusations “could not be proven with moral certitude” one way or another.
