The Arizona measure came after many hospital systems enacted strict visitation policies in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which sometimes barred clergy or other religious counselors from visiting.

Bishop Sweeney recalled that Pope Francis has called receiving vaccination “an act of love,” and that most of the diocese’s clerics and their staff have already been vaccinated.
No particular member of the clergy or employee of an entity affiliated with the archdiocese was singled out in the letter for unapproved political activity.
Clergy financial problems began soon after the government imposed a nationwide lockdown in March to slow the spread of COVID-19, which has killed 41,552 people in the U.K. as of Aug. 27.
Canon law requires that dioceses provide for the "decent support" of all incardinated clerics, with bishops required to offer at least the provision for basic sustenance, even to clerics not in ministry.
