The Nativity scene was made by the combined effort of more than 30 artisans. It features the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, wearing large golden crowns, in a stable with the Baby Jesus surrounded by angels.
The Vatican has published Pope Francis’ Christmas schedule for this year, which includes five special liturgies and prayers between Christmas Eve and the Solemnity of the Epiphany.
The number of faithful taking part in the Christmas liturgical celebrations will be limited, but all scheduled ceremonies will be livestreamed on social media and other platforms.
The tree is lit, but threats of violence force tighter security measures for the Holy Father’s busy schedule.
Lighting of the Christmas tree and unveiling of crèche took place in St. Peter’s Square on Dec. 9.
The Holy Father will have a busy schedule during December and January for Christmas and the new year.
