The provisional agreement was first signed in 2018 and then renewed in 2020 and 2022. The most recent two-year renewal signed in 2022 expires this week on Oct. 22.
Speaking during his return flight from Mongolia on Sept. 4, the Pope said that there is a joint commission between the Chinese government and the Holy See on the appointment of Catholic bishops in China.
China was the subject of talks this week between Cardinal Parolin and the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has argued that the agreement has failed to protect China’s Catholics from a crackdown on religious believers under President Xi Jinping.
Researchers said it was not clear whether RedDelta had succeeded in regaining access to the Vatican network, but they argued that the group’s efforts to do so underlined the Chinese Communist Party’s determination to increase its oversight of Catholics in China.
The Chinese Communist Party government in mainland China views Taiwan as a rebel province and has historically put pressure on countries to cut diplomatic ties with the island.
The cardinal told the Register that ‘it’s useless to fight now’ and urged a tactical retreat.
Cardinal Zen’s more recent post claimed that while he has been critical of Cardinal Re over the China deal, “The Problem is not between me and Cardinal Re. The problem is with Cardinal Parolin.”
Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, has been an outspoken opponent of the 2018 agreement between the Vatican and the People’s Republic of China regarding episcopal appointments.
