Pope Francis’ recent changes in canon law to the lay ministries of acolyte, lector and catechist are aimed at empowering a missionary Church at the parish level.
“Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than teachers,” said Paul VI, “and if he listens to teachers it is because they are witnesses.”
In his 1990 encyclical Redemptoris missio, Pope John Paul II described catechists as “irreplaceable evangelizers.”
Pope Francis received an audience with members of the National Catechetical Office of the Italian bishops’ conference at the Vatican.
The Holy Father addressed catechists and teachers in Munyonyo, Uganda.
