
Cardinal Zuppi Returns to Moscow as Vatican Peace Envoy

Cardinal Zuppi also recalled that the Pope has asked for another day of prayer and fasting for peace on Oct. 27.
During his time in China, Cardinal Zuppi is expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi met with President Joe Biden July 18 to discuss the Vatican’s peace efforts.
Cardinal Zuppi, who has already visited both Ukraine and Russia, will be in the U.S. capital from July 17-19 and will be accompanied by an official from the Vatican’s Secretariat of State.
The Moscow trip follows Cardinal Zuppi’s visit to Kyiv earlier this month where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other political leaders.
During the June 5–6 visit, Cardinal Zuppi is expected to meet with Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kulebas, Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, and possibly President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Although the Italian cardinal is more widely known for his social activism and closeness to those on Italy’s political left, he is also friendly to adherents of the traditional liturgy.
The cardinal and president of the Italian bishops’ conference recounted how St. Francis had been repulsed by the sight of lepers at first but experienced a transformation when he encountered them in person.
The priest who officiated at the June 11 ceremony says Cardinal Matteo Zuppi was aware of the event because he had ‘informed him myself.’
