The Vatican announced Jan. 22 that Pope Francis had accepted Cardinal Schönborn’s resignation.
Like Cardinal Müller, Cardinal Schönborn affirmed St. John Paul II’s teaching that the ordination of women would violate a fundamental ecclesiological principle.
In his book, Archbishop Gänswein also addressed the fact that Cardinal Schönborn and Cardinal Ratzinger were on a first-name basis.
Cardinal Schönborn, who noted that he has served as a CDF member for 25 years, said he regretted that the committee to which he belongs was not consulted over such a “sensitive question.”
According to Matteo Bruni, the cardinal and the synod’s ‘special secretaries’ are principally responsible for the text of the final report.
