The prelate noted that San Francisco is one of a growing number of dioceses and archdioceses filing for Chapter 11 as a way to address abuse lawsuits.
The Santa Rosa Diocese has about 200,000 Catholics out of a population of close to 1 million. More than two dozen U.S. dioceses, including two in U.S. overseas territories, have entered into bankruptcy proceedings, the vast majority in the past decade.
They are raising money and bidding against an unknown competitor for the property.
More than 60 lawsuits have been filed related to alleged abuse at Mount Saint John School, a former residential school for troubled boys an hour south of Hartford.
it faces 74 civil claims alleging the sexual abuse of minors.
