In just over three days, Pope Francis is scheduled to travel 900 miles within Iraq, meeting with political leaders, prominent Muslim clerics, Christians, and become the first pope in history to visit the Middle Eastern country.
Iraqi Archbishop Bashar Warda said the first-ever visit by a pope is eagerly awaited by a people that continues to feel the effects of the Islamic State’s campaign to eradicate the country’s 2,000-year-old Christian presence.

Pope Francis met with Iraq’s president Barham Salih on Saturday to discuss the need for stability in the country’s future, as well as the importance of Christians to maintaining the “social fabric” of Iraq.
Archbishop Warda said his Catholic community in Iraqi Kurdistan is tired of war and its tragic consequences saying, “They have continually suffered far too much and can no longer face an unknown future."
‘There is a kind of feeling that they cannot express,’ Archbishop Bashar Warda said, ‘but they at least feel relaxed in a way that even if, God forbid, something would happen, they are in safe hands.’
