Much of the archdiocese has been left reeling amid the fires, which have destroyed blocks of homes in the city and left countless buildings in ruins.
The Mass, celebrated on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, marked the beginning of a day of prayer in reparation for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ decision to honor a group that disrespects Catholicism.
The March 25 procession will go from a historic mission church, 3 miles down a main road to another parish, and back.
‘He was a good priest and a good bishop and a man of peace, and we are very sad to lose him,’ said Archbishop José Gomez, who broke into tears, at the Monday Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department press conference.
COMMENTARY: Jettisoning the distinction between ‘orientation and activity’ means the end of chastity as a virtue to be strived for — or implies that ‘the LBGT community’ is not capable of chastity and should therefore be preached a lesser Gospel.
‘God has a plan of love for every person. … We still need to work every day to build a society where every person will know the warmth of human love and every person will have what they need to lead their lives with dignity.’
Mary’s life on earth provides an example for all Catholics, Archbishop Gomez said, pointing to Our Lady’s visit with her relative, St. Elizabeth, while they were both pregnant.
