Addressing parents who are struggling to respond to a child experiencing gender dysphoria, Archbishop Coakley advised them to be open and listen to their child’s struggles but also to seek counseling and not to adopt pronouns different from the child’s biological sex.
The statements came as the spread of the coronavirus in the United States prompted widespread cancellations or postponements of public events and restrictions on public Masses in a growing number of dioceses.
The decision could “further deter families eligible for assistance from coming forward to access the services they need, such as nutrition assistance and housing,” the bishops said, warning that the decision will have “devastating consequences for immigrant communities.”
