Donald Trump, meanwhile, has confirmed that he will be attending the dinner.
EDITORIAL: If ever a presidential campaign season needed the Al Smith Dinner, it is this one.
The annual dinner, named in honor of the first Catholic to run for president, raises millions of dollars for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. Since John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon attended the dinner in 1960, it has been a tradition for both presidential nominees to attend and exchange lighthearted jokes about each other.
The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, first held in 1945, is organized to raise money for charitable causes in the Archdiocese of New York.
Every four years in a presidential election year, the Archdiocese of New York invites the presidential nominees of both major political parties to the dinner where it is traditional for the candidates to roast one another in a light-hearted manner.
COMMENTARY: After three contentious debates and in final stretch before Election Day, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will trade humorous barbs at tonight's annual fundraiser in New York.
