10 Graces You Receive Every Time You Attend Mass Devoutly
If Catholics really understood what happens at every Mass, churches would be full every day. Here’s why.

Aside from weekend Masses, I’ve made it a point to take my four kids to daily Mass as often as possible. It’s not always easy but I’m convinced that it’s worth the effort.
During the school year, I typically attend daily Mass with my 4-year-old. Since becoming a stay-at-home mom a few years ago, I’ve taken advantage of the opportunity to receive the Eucharist regularly. Don’t get me wrong — going to Mass with a toddler looks different every day. For the most part, she cooperates, but there are times when I leave Mass exasperated after chasing her down the aisle.
At first, I wondered what graces she and I were receiving at Mass every day, but I felt the Holy Spirit encouraging me to keep going, even on difficult days. Over time, I’ve come to see how much grace we’ve received just by being there.
Weekly Mass attendance in the US sits at about 24%, according to a study published by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) based out of Georgetown University. Although the research doesn’t reveal what’s causing the low Mass attendance, the study suggests that “Catholicism is strongest in what is often called the developing world, where GDP per capita is lower.” (In places like Nigeria, ”94% of self-identified Catholics surveyed said they attend weekly or daily Mass.”)
Have we forgotten the transformative power of the Eucharist? Are we just too busy? Satan attacks our souls every day. You can see it in the turmoil plaguing society: broken families, rising suicide rates, a complete lack of respect for life in the push for abortion and euthanasia. It’s clear that we don’t just need to go to Mass — we need to run to it!
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is Jesus’ gift to humanity. God gave us his only begotten son, Jesus — and Jesus gave himself completely for us. The Mass offers abundant graces that can produce life-changing results and ultimately bring the reward of eternal life with God.
So I’m grateful for stumbling upon German Capuchin Father Martin von Cochem‘s (1634-1712) book, Explanation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where he beautifully highlights 77 graces we receive every time we participate in the Mass devoutly.
“He (Jesus) dwells among us, present in the Mass and in the adorable Sacrament of the Altar, ready at all times to listen to our prayers, to afford us assistance in our need,” writes Father Martin.
Here are 10 of the 77 “graces and fruits” we receive from devout Mass attendance:
- “He [Jesus] pardons thee all thy venial sins, provided thou art firmly resolved to forsake them.”
- “He removes many of the imperfections attaching to thy good deeds.”
- “For the sake of this propitiatory victim [Jesus] the petitions proffered during Mass will be granted far sooner than those that are proffered at other times.”
- “When thou hearest Mass, thou art thyself in spirit a priest, empowered by Christ to offer the Mass both for thyself and others.”
- “By hearing Mass devoutly thou canst also enrich thy soul more than by aught else in the world.”
- “For each time that thou dost gaze reverently upon the sacred host thou wilt receive a recompense in heaven.”
- “If thou hearest Mass in a state of mortal sin, God offers thee the grace of conversion.”
- “If thou hearest Mass in a state of grace, God gives thee an augmentation of grace.”
- “[Through thy diligence of hearing Mass] Thou wilt also be strengthened against temptations which would otherwise have vanquished thee.”
- By hearing Mass, “thou canst even obtain for sinners the grace of conversion.”
“This knowledge may serve to make us appreciate and value more highly the holy sacrifice of the Mass, and assist at it more frequently, with greater joy and deeper devotion,” writes Father Martin in his book. “For the Masses offered daily are the weapons of divine grace, the fount of divine mercy, the sacrifice of atonement, which is all-powerful, if we assist at it devoutly.”
I’ve seen the graces of the Mass revealed in my own life, especially in the slow but steady conversion of a loved one. It’s all the more reason for me and the kids to keep attending Mass, reverently and regularly, placing everything in God’s hands.
