Who will be huddling together to watch the game ... from the convent.

While many football fans across the nation are less than enthusiastic at the idea of a three-peat Super Bowl for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are squaring off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, a déjà-vu scenario that Americans watched in 2023, nuns in St. Paul, Minnesota, will also huddle together to watch the game ... from the convent.

Some are there for the game, some are there to snack, and others just want to react in real time to the commercials that often steal the show.

It all started in 2018, when the sisters of the Daughters of St. Paul decided to live-tweet their Super Bowl experience, ultimately creating a unique, trending hashtag: #SuperBowlintheConvent.

Pauline Sister Bethany Davis remembers the year well and says her community will be keeping the tradition going again this year.

“And so one year, I think it was me and one other sister, we decided that we were going to live-tweet the Super Bowl,” the religious sister told EWTN News In Depth on Friday. “So she and I were live-tweeting this, and it took off, and other religious communities joined in on the fun the following year.”

Of the festive atmosphere, she added: “There are sisters in this room that are very clearly here just for the food, and there are sisters in here that are very clearly here just for the commercials, and there are sisters here that are actually here to watch the football game.”

And the tradition continues this Sunday, although the convent isn't particularly enthused with the gridiron matchup.

“This year, it’s like Groundhog Day, because the same teams are playing again. So we’re just kind of like, may the best man win, and we’re just praying for no injuries and praying for all the players and their families.”

As convents are powerhouses of prayer, perhaps the game will far exceed expectations this year. But in the end, for Sister Bethany, it’s really about offering a glimpse into religious life that many never see.

“We spend a lot of time in prayer and intercession, but we also are normal people with normal loves, and I think it’s important for people to see that in their feed, and it brings a little joy just to see the sisters being themselves.”

And since the Daughters of St. Paul are known as the “media nuns,” maintaining a social-media presence 365 days a year, it makes perfect sense to spend the time during the big game doing what they do best: sharing the joy of Christ online in an effort to evangelize.

“Sharing our lives is a really important part of evangelization because I think sometimes people look at religious sisters or religious life, and it feels like, almost like, entering into another world, or it feels very far removed,” Sister Bethany said.

So this weekend, make sure to follow these media-savvy religious sisters who will be offering the virtual world a tour into their lives, highlighting their beautiful souls so on fire for faith, online and off.
